Cupping Therapy
Home »Traditional Cupping Therapy for Muscle Tension, Circulation & Recovery
At Bloom Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine, we offer personalized cupping therapy at our Folsom location as part of our integrative approach to health and wellness. Cupping is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that uses gentle suction on the skin to help release muscle tension, encourage circulation, and support the body’s natural recovery process.
Cupping may be used on its own or combined with acupuncture and other treatments depending on your individual needs and wellness goals.
Cupping therapy is currently offered at our Folsom office only.
Location Offered: Folsom Only
What Is Cupping?
Cupping is a therapeutic technique that involves placing specially designed cups on targeted areas of the body and creating gentle suction. This suction lifts the skin and underlying tissues, which may help improve local circulation and reduce areas of muscle tightness and restriction.
Cupping has been used for generations in Chinese medicine and is commonly incorporated into treatment plans for patients experiencing muscle tension, soreness, stiffness, or discomfort.
The amount of suction and placement of the cups is adjusted based on your comfort level and specific treatment needs.
What Can Cupping Help Support?
Cupping may be incorporated into care for a variety of concerns, including:
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Back discomfort
- Muscle tightness
- Sports-related soreness
- Repetitive-use discomfort
- Limited mobility
- General muscle fatigue
- Post-exercise recovery
- Stress-related tension
- Areas of chronic tightness
Because every patient is different, we evaluate your symptoms and overall health before determining whether cupping should be part of your treatment plan.
Cupping for Muscle Tension & Pain
One of the most common reasons patients seek cupping is to address areas of stubborn muscle tension.
Tight muscles and restricted soft tissue can contribute to discomfort, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. The gentle suction created during cupping treatment is designed to lift and mobilize the tissues rather than applying downward pressure like traditional massage.
For some patients, this can provide a different type of release and may complement acupuncture, dry needling, stretching, or other therapies.
Cupping for Athletes & Active Lifestyles
Cupping is also popular among athletes and physically active patients who experience muscle soreness, tightness, or repetitive strain.
Whether you exercise regularly, participate in competitive sports, work in a physically demanding job, or simply experience muscle tension from everyday activities, cupping may be incorporated into a broader recovery and wellness plan.
At Bloom, we personalize treatment based on your activity level, symptoms, and goals rather than using the same approach for every patient.
What to Expect During a Cupping Treatment
During your appointment, your practitioner will discuss your symptoms, areas of tension, health history, and treatment goals.
Cups are then placed on selected areas of the body and gentle suction is created. Depending on the treatment plan, cups may remain stationary for several minutes or may be moved across the skin using a technique known as sliding or moving cupping.
Most patients describe the sensation as firm pressure or pulling rather than pain.
Your treatment may include cupping alone or in combination with:
- Acupuncture
- Dry needling
- Chinese medicine
- Stretching or mobility recommendations
- Lifestyle guidance
- Other integrative therapies
Will Cupping Leave Marks?
Cupping can temporarily leave circular marks or discoloration on the skin. These marks are caused by the suction created during treatment and are not the same as bruises caused by an injury.
The appearance and duration of the marks can vary depending on the individual and the intensity of treatment. They commonly fade over several days.
Your practitioner will explain what to expect and adjust treatment based on your comfort level.
Is Cupping Right for Everyone?
Cupping may not be appropriate for every patient or every health condition. Before beginning treatment, we review your medical history and any relevant health concerns.
Be sure to tell your practitioner if you:
- Take blood-thinning medications
- Have a bleeding disorder
- Have sensitive or damaged skin
- Have an active skin infection
- Are pregnant
- Have recently undergone surgery
- Have other medical conditions that may affect treatment
This allows us to determine whether cupping is appropriate and make adjustments when needed.
Cupping & Acupuncture
Cupping and acupuncture are frequently used together because they address the body in different but complementary ways.
Acupuncture uses carefully selected points to support the body’s overall function and balance, while cupping focuses more directly on areas of muscular tension and soft tissue restriction.
For patients experiencing pain, stiffness, or muscle tension, combining these therapies may provide a more comprehensive approach to care.

What Our Patients Say About Us
With each visit, I’ve continued to feel better, and my pain has been steadily decreasing—something I hadn’t experienced with physical therapy or other treatments. I truly can’t say enough good things about her care and expertise.
After giving birth to my daughter, I developed severe postpartum back pain and returned to see both Dr. Reagan and Dr. Tognetti. Within three sessions, my back was feeling so much better!
I am beyond grateful to have found Dr. Reagan and Dr. Tognetti. Bloom is hands down the best place to go for acupuncture in Northern California. They have made such a huge impact on my life, and I will forever be thankful for their care!
